Reclaiming Purpose When the Title Disappears

I spent years knowing exactly who I was.

When you spend your youth as a Marine, a SEAL, and a Tier 1 operator, your identity isn’t something you have to search for. It’s handed to you alongside your gear. I knew the mission down to the minute details. The enemy. The men standing beside me in the stack. I knew my exact capabilities, and I knew precisely what was expected of me every second I was on the line. Everything was clear, high-stakes, and executed with purpose.

Almost overnight, that life was completely gone.

When the noise stopped, I realized I didn’t know who I was anymore. The transition out of the uniform stripped away the framework I’d built my adult life around. That battle didn’t stay on foreign soil; it followed me straight through my front door. Except this new fight looked completely different. There was no tactical mission brief. There was no platoon around me to watch my six. I couldn’t see a visible, physical enemy in my crosshairs.

It was just me, alone with my thoughts, in a civilian world that felt painfully slow, quiet, and sometimes devoid of meaning.

The Darkest Room in the House

When you don’t know who you are, you default to survival mechanisms. I did what so many veterans, first responders, and high-performing men do when the floor falls out from under them. Isolated myself. I put on a brave face when I had to, but behind closed doors, I drank heavily. I tried to numb the noise inside my head, attempting to drown out the loss of purpose until I reached a point where I simply didn’t want to hurt anymore.

In a podcast interview I did with Shawn Ryan (which you can check out here), I opened up about that dark season of my life. I spoke about the night I came too close to ending my life, overwhelmed by pain, and the image of my children that flashed in my mind and stopped me in my tracks.

That night wasn’t the end of the battle. It was the beginning of learning how to fight a completely different one.

I had to start dealing with what was happening to me physically and mentally. I had to sit and confront the trauma, anger, and pain I had spent years running from or burying under intense training. Eventually, after trying to fix myself using every worldly tool available, I had to face a truth that was harder to swallow: I couldn’t keep doing this “my way”.

My way had brought me to the edge of an abyss. If I wanted to survive, I needed a total reset of my Standard Operating Procedures.

The True Root of Identity

One of the biggest breakthroughs of my life came when I stopped allowing my past to determine who I was going to become.

For years, I believed my identity was “SEAL”. Then I thought it was “operator”. Then I tried to anchor everything to being a father. But the hard truth I had to learn was that if your identity is tied to a job title, a rank, a performance metric, or even a human relationship, you’re building your house on sand.

When those things are stripped away (and in this broken world, they can be taken in an instant), you’re left with nothing.

My identity couldn’t be rooted in what I did or who I used to be. My identity had to be rooted in Christ.

When I stopped treating Scripture like a checklist and started actually listening to the Word of God, everything changed. The Bible is a tactical manual for the human soul. It cleanses the mind, tears down mental strongholds, and brings order to internal chaos. By surrendering my ego and turning my life over to Jesus, I discovered that overcoming fear with faith was the mechanism of spiritual survival.

The fears of abandonment, failure, and uselessness that had driven my bad decisions started to lose their power the moment I grounded myself in the unshakeable truth of who God said I was.

Stepping Back into Formation

True transformation happens when you combine the ultimate truth of the Bible with the raw strength of an accountable brotherhood. When you realize that overcoming fear with faith requires both a daily walk in the Word and a trusted unit to stand beside you, the shadows start to clear.

The UNAFRAID community is a dedicated space built for men who are ready to pursue truth, strengthen their faith, confront what’s holding them back, and walk alongside other men who are committed to doing the same thing.

This isn’t a club for guys who have it all figured out. I sure as hell didn’t have it figured out when I started this journey, and I’m still learning every day. It’s just about deciding enough is enough, dropping the excuses, and taking the next step toward your real purpose.

Your past does not get to write your future. The assignment may have changed, but your Commander hasn’t. It’s time to stop fighting by yourself and get back into a formation that moves with clear purpose.

If you’re ready to stop fighting alone, secure your place in the UNAFRAID Community.
